There are two ways you can get a toll-free fax number:
- Through an online fax service
- Through your phone company
Get a Number with an Online Fax Service
This is the best and fastest way to get a toll-free number for faxing. Online fax services are companies that let you fax online over email without the need of fax machines. They deliver faxes electronically, and you can read them as PDFs on any device without wasting paper and ink.
To be able to receive faxes, they provide a fax number for each new account. Follow these steps:
- Sign up with your preferred online fax service. (Here you can learn more about Google fax services, if you don’t know where to start)
- Enter your account details.
- Enter the email you want to associate to your online fax account.
- Pick a number. New accounts are provided a free online fax number, you can choose between local and toll-free numbers. For toll-free ones, you need to choose between the available ones on a list.
That’s it. Upon finishing your installation, your toll-free number will be ready to receive fax transmissions.

Requesting it to your phone company
You can request a toll-free number through a landline using your phone company. They are paid via a monthly fee. Then you’ll need to wait for the company to come to your office and install it. You get the number and prefix according to what’s available.
We don’t like this method because you have to add the cost of a fax machine and fax supplies.
If you already have a toll-free landline, you can transfer it to an online fax service. Ensure that your future provider has a “fax number porting” feature.
